Chrismas

Amissville Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company would like to wish you a happy and healthy holiday season. As you celebrate, please remember these safe practices when decorating for the holidays:
Holiday Decorating

• Be careful with holiday decorations. Choose decorations that are flame-resistant or flame-retardant.

• Keep lit candles away from decorations and other things that can burn.

• Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both.

• Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read the manufacturer’s instructions for the number of light strands to connect.

• Use clips, not nails, to hang lights so the cords do not get damaged.

• Keep decorations away from windows and doors. Holiday Entertaining

• Test your smoke alarms and tell guests about your home fire escape plan.

• Keep children and pets away from lit candles.

• Keep matches and lighters up high in a locked cabinet.

• Stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop.

• Ask smokers to smoke outside. Remind smokers to keep their smoking materials with them so young children do not touch them.

• Provide large, deep ashtrays for smokers. Wet cigarette butts with water before discarding.

Happy Holidays!

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends, and food. However, it is also a time when the risk of fire increases. Here are some tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday:

  1. Stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food.

  2. Stay home when cooking your turkey and check on it frequently.

  3. Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot, and kids should stay 3 feet away.

  4. Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids.

  5. Don’t wear loose-fitting clothing around open flames.

  6. Don’t leave your food unattended on the stove or in the oven.

  7. If deep-frying a turkey, do it outside.

  8. Never put water on a grease fire.

  9. Store fire extinguishers in plain sight, near an exit – not under the sink.

I hope these tips help you have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!
